A few words in English

I cannot translate the whole site here but I wanted to give you a few words of explanation.

Dear Friends and Sponsors,

As the holidays are fast approaching, SEA feels the time is right to share a few photos and update you on some facts, and most of all to ask for your generous support.

First meet Sneha our latest “addition”. At 6 years old she is the youngest by far. It took her only a couple of months to be part of our wonderful group of children. She is loved by everyone and full of affection for her “brothers” and “sisters”.

Tara who manages the house, gives her some extra care and attention partially because of her “special status” as the youngest one but also because she is just irresistible.

The impression you get when visiting the SEA houses after school is one of happiness, sharing and constant caring.

Schedule permitting, children help in the kitchen in a very joyous atmosphere.

When I started writing this letter on behalf of SEA - and already in the holiday spirit - I was going to use a fairy tale style: “Once upon a time, in a country of mountains and valleys, of beautiful temples and many gods, lived a large and very happy family….”.

It would not have been that far from the truth.

However, at the same time, we must keep in mind that Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and that some of these children have lost their family. They are living at the SEA houses because their parents could not take care of them. They were or would have been on the street like too many children in Nepal without SEA.

SEA sponsors twenty-one children at the moment. It gives them two safe and comfortable houses to live in, caring and guidance.

Most importantly, SEA has a commitment to bringing these children to the maximum of their potential through EDUCATION.

Sarita, Hari, Shree, Raj Kumar, Hemkumari, Samjhana, Rajindra, Naren, Jyoti, Laxmi, Laxmi junior, Pratikcha, Sanguita, Sarita junior, Pramilla, Shankar, Pasang, Neema, Satikcha, Anga and Sneha are in the best schools Nepal has to offer.

They study very seriously and also receive additional group tutoring every day, representing a total of twelve hours a week.

No longer undernourished, troubled or lacking the educational skills and caring atmosphere a child needs, their results have been impressive.

Sarita will complete her nursing studies next year, Hari has completed what we know as “high school” and is enrolled in further (realistic) studies to become a Chef, and over the past two years Shree has been studying in Bangalore, India, with the objective of joining a medical university next year.

They are our first success-story-in-the-making as we have sponsored them since 1994.

Raj Kumar, who has been sponsored since May 1993, is also a high school student.

As students are getting older and finish their secondary education, we are faced with new financial challenges: college expenses and university expenses for our brightest students like Shree.

We should also mention higher costs of living, economical and political chaos in Nepal, and high medical expenses for one of our children, but the bottom line is that

WE NEED NEW SPONSORS in order to give our children a complete course of education and a chance at a career they will be successful at.

Raj Kumar and Laxmi

SEA-USA has recently opened an account in the USA to facilitate donations from new sponsors.

Any gift will be immensely appreciated. Sponsoring a child is of course an option.

Keep in mind that 100% of proceeds go to education, housing and care of our children in Nepal.

SEA has no administrative overheads: all adults involved in this project in France and USA are volunteers. Only the staff employed on location to run the two houses and tutor the children is paid.

SEA in a nutshell:

SEA sponsors very poor children in Nepal.

Sponsorships began in 1991 after Marie-Hélène Duprat (now president of SEA) visited Nepal and encountered her first “street kids”. In 1996 SEA was created in Paris as an “Association under the law of 1901”.

SEA is a non-profit and a non-denominational organization.

The goal of SEA is to give quality education, emotional security and a caring family atmosphere to all sponsored children.

SEA’s commitment to the children is long term including vocational training and university depending on the children’s abilities and talents.

Their progress is monitored and the school they attend is carefully chosen. A few children are in boarding schools and return to the SEA houses at vacation time.

Most children live in one of the two houses and go to school as day students.

SEA is their home and our commitment is to keep the program running as successfully as it has in almost two decades now.
